Daily Caller accuses CNBC of mimicking Fox Business Network while older viewers complain about visibility

When a high profile trader or firm is struggling is when they typically receive the most unsolicited advice.

As CNBC struggles to regain its lost ratings glory, particularly among younger demographics, is its recent screen design alienating its most loyal viewers?

“The powerful redesign features an engaging and improved way to deliver the important content and data CNBC viewers want,” CNBC’s Jennifer Dauble told the NewscastStudio blog.

Older CNBC viewers having difficulties with the screen

While ratings showing viewers in the 28-54 age bracket find other methods to gather information – a societal trend impacting more than CNBC – the network’s most loyal audience, those 55 years and older, appear to find difficulty with the new screen design.

The NewscastStudio article explains the new look includes:

Bug Stack – new look features a bug stack on the lower right
Real-Time Data – charts and boards have new highlighting features to correspond to what talent is referencing Fluid & Dynamic Motion – the motion of our screen is fluid and integrated
Graphics – the new look features a very clean and clear screen with a modern tone
Animated Elements– all of the new screen components have animation both on and off as well as from one element to another

“Overall the look is clean and polished, a great upgrade for the network,” the NewscastStudio blog gushed.  While the article gushed, viewers continued to complain.

Issues with CNBC bug stack

“The new CNBC bug stack in the lower right corner of the screen stinks. It is too small to be easily readable and the red numbers on a black background are barely discernible,” said an apparently elderly viewer on a NewscastStudio blog, contradicting the accompanying article.

“Very poor visibility. Not an improvement but rather a downgrade. I go now to Fox to check changes in major averages,” said viewer and retired teacher David Savage on the same blog.

But it is the reference to Fox Business Network that might be most biting to CNBC.

A recent Daily Caller article claimed the new design “Mimics Fox Business Network.”

The blog says that 25-year-old CNBC’s streamlined graphics approach should look familiar – because Fox Business made the switch back in 2012.

When FBN underwent their makeover, among the major differences was a “wing” (an info panel on the right side of the screen) which they removed. At the time, the only network that reportedly still had this wing was CNBC. Is this all just really catty? Probably. Still, with the new, cleaner-looking redesign, CNBC’s right side graphic disappears. Hmmm, this all sounds rather familiar.

While CNBC is ushering in a new design, it strangely draws deep passion from its viewers on the issue.

“I absolutely HATE CNBC’s new look,” wrote Honolulu, Hawaii resident Daniel Nunes. “I also miss the music. The new music is horrible. Please go back to the old look because the new look stinks!”

One would think that in Hawaii he might have more beautiful things to look at in real life so as not to complain about the new look of CNBC’s graphic design.  However, the same could be said for me writing this article.
